NSW South Coast Art & Craft Galleries
The South Coast of NSW is blessed with many resident artists and art & craft galleries which make for very engaging visits.
There are three galleries in Kangaroo Valley, Galeria Aniela Fine Art, Miles Gallery & Studio and JP Gallery in the Village. They offer a wide range of arts and crafts from modern paintings through to ceramics.
Drive down the Cambewarra Mountain and make your way to Bundanon, the estate and art collections left by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd. It offers the visitor a unique collection of cultural and environmental assets. Included in his gift to the nation was a collection comprising several thousand art works, photographs, furnishings and documents referred to as the Bundanon Collection. It was the culmination of a considerable effort over several years that included holding works back from sale, buying works - in particular works by Merric, Emma Minni and Arthur Merric Boyd.
Sidney Nolan had added to the Collection with a number of early works, and a series made in the Bundanon studio in 1981, prior to his death in 1992. Set by the Shoalhaven River it makes for a quite beautiful visit so go by the Cambewarra Estate and select a wine and picnic to Bundanon to enjoy a full day there.
Drive down to Milton and meet David Benson and view his colourful works in his own studio while sipping a genuine espresso. David is a very interesting artist and the view from his studio is also breath taking.
Australian Aboriginal Art - Jervis Bay South Coast NSW
Renowned Aboriginal art can be seen at the "Laddie Timbery's Aboriginal Arts and Crafts" located at the Lady Denman Museum Complex Jervis Bay on the Shoalhaven South Coast of NSW. Named after Laddie Timbery who is an aboriginal man from the Eora nation. The Timbery family has been respected for 170 years for their fine shell and burning work. When you come to the Bidjigal Arts and Craft centre you will be able to view and buy their works.
Australia's Museum of Flight - HMAS Albatross Nowra
Australia's largest aviation museum (and the country's largest regional museum) houses fascinating relics, models and simulations that are educational and really great fun for both adults and kids. There is also a good under cover childrens' play area and cafe. There are two active days each year where the public can see many civilian aircraft put through their paces. The museum also overlooks the active military airbase at HMAS Albatross in Nowra on the Shoalhaven NSW South Coast, birthplace of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Air Arm, so you might get a sighting of a jet fighter or helicopter during your visit.
The South Coast NSW area of Australia is also famous for flying because of Charles Kingsford Smith, affectionately known as 'Smithy'. He was a great Australian aviator who was the first man to fly across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand using Seven Mile Beach as his runway in 1928. He was also the first to fly from San Francisco across the Pacific Ocean to Australia and the first to fly from London to New York. Sydney's International airport is named after him.
Bradman Museum Bowral Capital Country NSW
If Lords and the MCC is the home of cricket then the Bradman museum is definitely heaven for cricket lovers. It is perfectly located beside the picturesque Bradman Oval, where England played the Bradman XI in 2003. Pioneer Farm Museum Kangaroo Valley South Coast NSW
This is one of the most enlightening displays of rural Australia. The display of early settlers' houses, farming equipment and local history is lovingly maintained by the Kangaroo Valley Historical Society. It includes a vintage farm and housewares, original farm buildings from the 1880's and historic family trees of early settlers. This is a must for both international and city visitors as it provides a unique insight into the early life of Australia. The museum also has a wildlife reserve with lyrebirds and wallaroos and a lovely BBQ area. Rumour has it that you might spot a bunyip on one of the magical bushwalks. (A bunyip is a mystical animal not as large as the Yeti and not as small as a Leprechaun.)
The Lady Denman Museum Jervis Bay NSW South Coast
The Lady Denman ferry which operated in Sydney Harbour is housed in this museum. Walk around inside the Lady Denman. Great for the kids. The Museum carries three collections: Aboriginal, Maritime and European. The large boat shed displays old boat building methods which were part of early Huskisson history. Beside this you will find a large pond that is home to a variety of ocean fish. From here you can stroll along the mangrove boardwalk and learn about the ecosystem of this coastal environment. Also at the museum you will discover a historic church and old classrooms from local schools together with visiting exhibitions. You will also find excellent BBQ facilities, grassy playing areas and toilet facilities - suitable for an enjoyable family visit.
